Hearty Condolence to Mar Moolakkattu and Molakkattu family.
Sad to hear the death of our beloved Moolakkatt John sir. Though I know him since my childhood, we became close friends since 1981 when I became associate vicar at Uzhavoor church. John sir has been a man of good faith, morals, and principles. He led an exemplary life.
John sir also lived in Chicago for a few months. Some of his children are also our parishioners in Chicago. On behalf of the Knanaya Catholic Parishes in Chicago and Knanaya Catholic Region, I express our sincere condolence and prayers to Mar Mathew Moolakkatt and the Moolakkattu family. Yesterday, February 4, 2010, marked the passing of one of the most beloved elders of our family, John Moolakkat. He was affectionately known as Kunjukuttan Appapan and he will be dearly missed by all of us.

He was the rock of our extended family’s foundation for many years and all sought his wisdom for any dilemma. After our grandfather’s untimely death, Appapan provided loving guidance and mentorship to our father and uncle when they were young men in school. We will always be indebted to his generous nature. If not for his love and mentorship for our father, our family would not be where we are today. We will never forget what he has done for us. Appachen sought his advice and blessings throughout his life and we were fortunate to have had a close relationship with Appapan. He was the beacon of our family’s ship! I am sure that all his nephews and nieces have similar stories.

He was a hero in many people’s eyes not only for his wisdom but also for his patriotism. He left his teaching job at Uzhavoor St. Stephen’s LPS to join as a soldier in the Indian regiment for the British forces on the Eastern front in World War II (from 1941-1946) as part of the deal Indian National Congress made to get India’s independence. The stories of the grueling fight and rescue were awe inspiring. Here was a man willing to give up his life for the sake of India’s freedom! Not many of us know such bravery! Most in Kerala were spared the misery and horrors of the war and freedom fight. But he believed in India and continued to live his life as a Civil Servant.

Following are few of his accomplishments we know:

* Teacher @ St. Stephen’s LPS
* Soldier in the Indian regiment for the British forces during WW II
* Bench Clerk @ Pala Municipality Court
* Some of the Leadership Roles he held:
o St. Stephen’s Church
o President & Board member, Cooperative Bank, Kudakachira
o Founding Secretary, Joseph Chazhikatt Smaraka Samathy
o Executive Committee Member, Foundation Committee for St. Stephen’s College
o Founding President, St. Stephen’s Vincent DePaul Conference Uzhavoor
o Member, KCC Central Working Committee,
o Many more like this…

Appapan was a man of foresight and vision. He has compiled our family tree in book form for the coming generations. It was an arduous task, at best, as written records of our forefathers are often scarce and difficult to find. Yet he did not let that deter him and as a result, we will always have it as a part of Appapan’s legacy.

Most of all, we will remember his love for GOD, his family and the community. He always had a smile on his face and gentle words for all of us. He is a person we can confidently say that “he has given more to community/family than he has received from it”. So we are thankful that God let him live long enough to see his oldest son become the Archbishop of Kottayam. We will miss him very much! It is only fitting that we remember and honor him with our prayers.
